Every reconstituted peptide is mostly bacteriostatic water, yet it gets a fraction of the attention the peptide does. That's backwards: the water choice determines whether a multi-dose vial stays safe over weeks, and the water volume determines every number on your syringe. Here's the complete picture.

What bacteriostatic water is

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The benzyl alcohol doesn't sterilize - it suppresses bacterial growth, which is what makes a vial safe to puncture repeatedly over days or weeks. It's a pharmaceutical product (commonly sold in 30 ml multi-dose vials) with decades of clinical use for diluting injectable medications.

The common error is reconstituting a month's vial with plain sterile water: nothing prevents bacterial growth between doses. 'Reconstitution solution' sold by peptide vendors is usually just bacteriostatic water at a markup - check the label for 0.9% benzyl alcohol.

How long it lasts, and how to store it

  • Unopened: use by the printed expiration date; room temperature is fine.
  • After first puncture: the pharmaceutical convention is to discard multi-dose vials 28 days after opening - the benzyl alcohol suppresses growth, it doesn't ban it.
  • Refrigeration isn't required for the water itself, but the reconstituted peptide it goes into should be refrigerated - the peptide is the fragile partner.
  • Never freeze it, and discard any vial with cloudiness or particles.

How much to use: the only question that changes your math

The volume you add never changes the dose - only the concentration, and therefore the numbers on your syringe. A 10 mg vial with 1 ml is 10 mg/ml; with 3 ml it's 3.33 mg/ml. The practical rule from compounding practice: pick a volume that puts your typical draw between 10 and 50 units on an insulin syringe - large enough to read accurately, small enough to fit. One physical limit people forget: peptide vials are small (often 3 ml capacity). '5 ml of water in a 10 mg vial' can be a plan that doesn't physically fit - reconstitute across the volumes the glass allows.

Benzyl alcohol: the fine print

Benzyl alcohol at 0.9% is well tolerated in adults at typical volumes. Its genuine contraindication is neonates ('gasping syndrome' - the reason bacteriostatic products are never used in newborns), and very large volumes are avoided in pregnancy. A small number of people report injection-site irritation attributable to the preservative; bacteriostatic saline is the usual workaround discussed in compounding practice.
